Are You a Mental Slave to Your Job? Part 1

My thighs hurt from my new schedule change. My day now has a 1 hour workout and 1 hour swim 5 days a week from 9:30am-11:30am. My body is not very happy and wants me to quit immediately and just have a bowl of ice-cream and give up this whole looking like Halle Berry craze. I can hear that little voice in my head saying I’d need a whole lot of surgery to even get close. Anyway yesterday I had my first water aerobics class…swarmed by a sea of older faces, I picked out the only other young face in the group so I wouldn’t feel so bad that these much older and in way better shape people were whipping my butt and twisting in positions my body didn’t even know it could..

So after 2 hours of this torture packaged as water aerobics (kidding was totally fun) I decided I should still swim and went over to talk to this girl named Tamika (I hate that name geez - long story). Anyway we were talking about workouts (okay maybe we were talking about how the older people whip my butt), but eventually I told her if she had her mornings free she could meet us at the gym and we could workout and swim. Her remark was that she’d love that but what would happen when she had to go back to her job? Well when are you going back to your job I asked? MAY 1st!!!!!

Are you kidding me? May 1st is like a month away, I thought. Even a month off from her job and she was worrying about what would happen to the workout schedule when she went back, and the state of things at her job. I remember when I had a 9-5 there was this one day that there was snow and ice on the ground. Schools and Daycares were closed and I wanted to pile my child up in my car and risk our lives on the icy streets to go to work! In my mind I had stuff to do - way more important than the life of me or my child…Have you ever had a job where you felt like you were the backbone of the office - nothing can be done right without you? You spend countless hours there working. You go home and you are making your dinner while you think about all the things you forgot to do and you are mentally making a list and checking it twice about all the things you have to get done at work in the morning. You are sick and you feel guilty for taking the time to get yourself well. You never take vacations - just keep piling them up on the back of your payslip - one day you will need them right? You are off and your phone keeps ringing, everyone wanting to know what to do now that you took a day off, or you are calling telling everyone to do this or that for you. You are on vacation and are worried about how the office is running and it’s not even your own buisness! Or maybe you are self employed and you work from 7am-12pm and dream about all the things that you haven’t done. You can’t go on vacation - who would run your company? You can’t have sick days - who would run your company? You can’t take the day off - who would run your company?

But what would that job do if you were to say DIE? It would carry on like every regular business. It would go on - I mean they may have a moment of silence but it would go on. If you view things from that perspective then it makes sense to stop mentally worrying about a job that will still move on without you. It’s like a train - if you don’t get there on time it still moves on to the next stop. You worrying about that train makes no difference whatsoever - it still moves on.

Tomorrow we will discuss Part 2: How to Stop Being a Mental Slave to Your Job.
